Bio
An internationally known lecturer and choral conductor, Christopher Walker is also one of the Church’s most prolific and versatile composers. Born and educated in England, he earned his degree in music from Bristol University. He was the first director of music for 18 years at Clifton Cathedral in Bristol, opened in 1973. He has appeared on BBC T.V. and radio and his music is frequently broadcast.
His extensive oeuvre includes such well-known works as the “Celtic Alleluia,” from the iconic Celtic Mass, “The Lord Is My Light,” “At the Name of Jesus,” “Be Still, and Know that I am God,” “Because the Lord is my Shepherd,” the “Veni Sancte Spiritus” written for the U.K. visit of Pope John Paul II in 1982, and “Laudate, Laudate Dominum,” which was written for the dedication of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Los Angeles and sung at the Papal Mass during Pope Francis’ visit to Washington, D.C., in 2015. Other popular composed Mass settings include the Belmont (chant) Mass and the Mass of St. Paul the Apostle.
Christopher has also published many collections for children: Music for the Children’s Liturgy of the Word – for the three-year cycle of Sunday readings, Calling the Children (including “Jesus, You are Bread for Us” – a favorite for First Communion celebrations) and, in collaboration with Daughter of Charity Sister Paule Freeburg, Way of the Cross for Children, the three volumes of Stories and Songs of Jesus and We Shall Praise Your Name Morning and Afternoon prayers for the classroom.
Christopher believes that authentic text has primacy over music in worship. His inspiration for composing music is the wish to be of service, hoping that it sparks faith in people, encouraging them to “sing, have faith and carry on.”
He was named the NPM Pastoral Musician of the Year in 2012. His wide-ranging experience makes him a versatile presenter for parish and school events. His talks and workshops focus on music and liturgy for adults and children, cantoring and conducting principles and help for fledgling composers.
After more than 20 years as music director, Christopher left the church of St. Paul the Apostle in Los Angeles in 2021 to pursue his own compositions, including his first ‘church opera.’ He resides in Santa Monica, California. When he is in England, he continues as occasional musician and conductor at Clifton Cathedral.
