Above All Other
Above All Other was composer by request for the Carmelite shrine of Our Lady of Doncaster is in the heart of the English city of Doncaster. Established in 1350 after a farmer’s wife and her child were miraculously rescued from drowning in a torrential flood as the people prayed to Mary for help. This pilgrimage hymn may be sung at any time in honor of Our Lady, either during Mass or at a prayer service. Although primarily an assembly hymn, there are optional SATB and descant parts, and the soprano and alto parts may be sung as a two-part version. Parts are also provided for two instruments in C (B-flat parts are available online). The text repeats at the beginning and end of each verse to help the faithful participate easily, especially if they are in procession.
