O Night That Is Brighter Than the Day
David Hurd,
Asterius of Pontus, ca. 400
This ancient Easter text—a poetic prefiguration of the Exsultet—by Asterius of Pontus (ca. 400) is here set for unaccompanied SATB choir (or antiphonal double choir). For advanced choirs—mainly because of its range and occasional divisi—this hymn is nevertheless strictly homophonic, triadic (but not traditionally tonal), and in common time. Thus, advanced choirs will find it relatively easy to put together once they become accustomed to the harmonic language.
