Robert Benson, Ph.D.

Bio

Dr. Robert Benson studied organ with William Lemonds in Kansas City and with Richard Gayhart at the University of Kansas. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.

A native of Missouri, he has been an organist and choir master since the age of 16, serving churches throughout the Midwest including St. Thomas the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Ann Arbor, Michigan, St. David’s Episcopal Church in Southfield, Michigan, and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Oxford, Ohio.

Benson currently composes for choir, organ and other instruments. He is professor emeritus at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. His work has been performed in the United Kingdom, Italy, and Canada as well as throughout the United States by the Miami University Men’s Glee Club and Collegiate Chorale, the Butler Philharmonic Chorus of southwest Ohio, the Cincinnati Camerata, the Valley Chamber Chorale of Stillwater, Minnesota, and more.

In addition to OCP’s Trinitas series, his work has been published by Augsburg Fortress, St. James Music Press, Church Publishing Company, Mark Foster Music and others. His compositions have been reviewed in journals including The American Organist, The Diapason, Journalof the Association of Anglican Musicians and The Hymn

Benson is an active member of the Association of Anglican Musicians and former dean of the Cincinnati Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.
