A beautiful collection of songs to motivate Catholics of all ages to speak out against injustice, Plenty reminds us that we are all responsible for each other.
One of the most recognized female Catholic composers of our time, Janèt Sullivan Whitaker offers us an array of songs that can be used for personal reflection, reconciliation and retreats as well as songs for liturgy: responsorial psalms and songs for the presentation of gifts, gathering and sending forth, among other moments.
“The Lord Is Near,” and its powerful gospel rhythm, was first written as a setting for Psalm 145 but evolved into a Communion song about not only the greatness of all God’s works, but justice, graciousness and mercy for everyone at all times. An appealing song for younger generations, “We Are One” touches on the ways our faith unites us.
The title track “Plenty” is a challenging invitation for all of us who have been blessed with resources, comfort and security to share from our abundance with those who lack basic necessities. Janèt’s spirit and passion are captured in the lyrics that drive us to make the difference, committing ourselves to good stewardship every day.
Inspired by her meetings with women at a restorative justice ministry, “In The Arms of Your Mercy” is a message of strength to these women—and to all of us who frequently need this reminder of hope—as we grow in our faith and wellness.
The joyful and fresh setting of Psalm 85, “Lord, Show Us Your Mercy and Love,” has been an OCP treasure since it appeared in Spirit & Song. Meanwhile, “To Love Like You,” a gentle tune that sets music to the well-known words of Jesus as proclaimed in Matthew 22:37, can be sung by a children’s choir or a duet between children and women.
“Our Eyes Fixed on You” is based on Hebrews 11:8–12:2 and can be sung at a slower tempo accompanied by guitar or piano or it can take on a livelier, upbeat tempo with full band. Finally, “As Christ Is for Us,” also found in Our Common Home, emphasizes our call to share kindness with the hungry, the poor and the helpless.
Plenty is a collection that resonates with people struggling from abuse, grief, depression or anxiety, yet, at the same time, its songs give us assurance of God’s ever-present generosity in all things and God’s many graces pouring down from heaven.
