John Greally was born in Belfast in 1934. Originally trained as a journalist, he served as a member of the Royal Air Force in England during the 1950s. He later spent nine years as both a Jesuit student and teacher. He eventually returned to journalism, working for several newspapers in England, Wales and the Irish Republic.
Greally is a self-taught composer of instrumental and choral music, and while his output is not extensive, his piano sonata has been aired several times by the BBC, and his concerto has drawn praise from violinist and conductor, Yehudi Menuhin. His music for the church includes Latin anthems and Christmas carols. He currently resides in Wales with his wife.
