Pia helps with the Spanish lyrics for songs such as Pan de Vida and Ven al Banquete. While collaborating on A Contemplative Rosary, she composed Pilgrim Prayer—her first song—as a way of walking with grace through life’s changes.She does leadership training and anthropological research with immigrant and refugee communities in California. Pia directed a service-learning program for Santa Clara University and a peace education project with the Archdiocese of San Francisco and has also taught at Stanford University and at the Franciscan School of Theology in Berkeley.
Her writings on social justice education and community organizing have appeared in various USCC publications and international journals. Pia published Immigrant Participatory Arts (Cultural Initiatives, 2004) and contributed chapters to Adult ESL (Erlbaum, 1998) and The Future of Prophetic Christianity (Orbis, 1993). She has a doctorate from Stanford University and served as editorial assistant to ecumenical theologian Robert McAfee Brown.
Pia lives with her husband, OCP composer Bob Hurd, in San Jose, California.
