Bio
†Mary Jo Tully (1936-2024) was a renowned writer, teacher and the first lay woman to become chancellor of a U.S. Catholic diocese.
For decades, Mary Jo wrote a regular column on Sunday scriptures in the Catholic Sentinel, donating her journalism pay to other causes. Her book, The Path toward Resurrection, carries the Stations of the Cross beyond the season of Lent, helping us walk in the footsteps of our Savior and faithfully bear our own crosses each day. The Catholic Catechist's Companion is a comprehensive guide, offering song suggestions, prayers, Scripture references and liturgical guidelines for preparing prayer services, liturgies and other celebrations with children.
In 2008, she received the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal from Pope Benedict XVI. The University of Portland awarded her an honorary doctorate in 2000, calling her "an astute teacher" and saying that the labor of her life has been "to educate others in the brilliant light of Christ’s life and story." She retired in 2016 from the Archdiocese of Portland after 27 years of service.
